Epidendrum cerinum

For some reason I had always
called this plant Epidendrum comayaguense This plant came from the Mixteca
region of central Oaxaca and it seemed the name fit the plant, BUT, the name is
not even of Mexican origin. The type specimen of comayaguense in the Ames
collection, came from the state of Comayagua, Minas de Oro, Honduras at 4000 ft.
/ 1217 meters elevation. It is a seldom seen species occasionally appearing in
dense oak forests on scattered mountain tops about 100 miles southwest of Oaxaca
City. This plant was originally described as cerinum by Schlecter in 1918 versus
1933 for Ames, so cerinum it is. Schlecter's specimen came from Coban, Guatemala
at 1550 meters elevation.
