Encyclia asperula
Encyclia asperula is an interesting species. It comes from the intermediate climates between 4000 and 5000 feet elevation just north of Comitan on the road to Ocosingo. It grows alongside Laelia superbiens and is quite common where it is found. The plant habit is identical to Encyclia gravida, but these flowers do open well as you can see and are what Weyman calls typical tampense types. Orchid growers are kinda wierd in the way they relate one plant to another and since he grew up in Florida, when tampense used to abound, he uses the comparison a lot!!! I keep telling him I am from Texas, know diddly about orchids and tampense might as well be the name of rose! Give me a break!
